1962 and prior - Carlyle Upholstery was quietly serving Manhattan white glove society with the finest old world craftsmanship.
1963 - Recognizing a strong urban demand for custom tailored, finely made sleep sofas in a sea of cheap mass produce, Mr.deMatteo combined the finest elements of custom upholstered design and married it to alternative bedding. Starting out with a few daybeds, trundles and a couple of sleep sofa models in a modest Upper East Side Store front, was the beginning of what would soon become a Manhattan icon. A staple for Manhattan apartment life.
1972- That same Carlyle showroom now has 4 full time salesman, 20 custom sofa bed styles in 40 fabrics and 5 leathers and 2 vinyl's.
1973 - Carlyle opens its own fully staffed factory in Flushing, New York.
1976 - Carlyle moves to larger factory in Long Island City, New York.
1977 - Carlyle opens stores in Paramus and Englewood, New Jersey.
1978 - Carlyle opens stores in Scarsdale and Garden City, New York.
1979 - Factory moves to larger facility in Lodi, New Jersey.
1980 - Custom styles grow to 35, 200 fabrics, 20 leathers. Factory is producing Carlyle products as well as custom private label items for other retailers and design concerns.
1985 - Carlyle scales back retail showrooms to cover Manhattan exclusively .
1991 - After a small stint with film, television and print, in and around the upholstery industry since the young age of 13, and equipped with a Finance/Marketing background from Boston University Mr.deMatteo's youngest son Darren deMatteo enters the business as a salesman and interim manager of the 63rd street showroom.
1995 - Opens experimental value priced showroom on 79th street and Third Avenue.
1998 - Opens Clearance Center / Custom showroom in Chelsea, N.Y.
2000 - Custom styles grow to over 100, 2000 fabrics, 40 leathers. Factory is producing Carlyle products as well as custom private label items for other retailers and design concerns on an expanded level.
2005 - Closes 79th experimental showroom.
2007 - Moves factory to much larger facility in Moonachie, N.J.complete with full design showroom.
2008 - Relaunch of Chelsea showroom as a "custom design showcase" for the lower west side.
2009 - Renovation of Flagship 63rd street showroom.
Over the years Carlyle has provided the finest custom sofas and sofa beds for four of the last six U.S Presidents, countless politicians, diplomats and celebrities as well as many captains and madams of industry, entertainment and the arts.
